COMPAQ INTRODUCES TWO 20-MHz 386SX MACHINES
On Monday June 18, Compaq introduced the Deskpro 386s/20 and the SLT 386s/20.
Both feature the 20-MHz version of the Intel 386SX processor combined with
cache memory.
DESKPRO 386s/20
The 386s/20 comes standard with 2 MB of memory, a 3 1/2-inch diskette drive,
accelerated VGA graphics, and four ISA slots. Three models of the 386s/20 are
available:
No hard disk: $3,299
60 MB disk: $4,499
12 MB disk: $5,299
We believe these prices are relatively high compared to the Deskpro 386N which
Compaq announced a month ago. The 386N includes a 16-MHz 386SX, 2 MB of
memory, two slots, and a 40 MB hard disk for $3,199. Compaq implicitly
attempts to justify the higher price of the 386s/20 by stating in the press
release that it delivers "up to 50 percent faster system performance than
non-cached 16-MHz 386SX products, such as the IBM PS/2 Model 55SX" [and
presumably the 386N].
IMPACT ON APPLE: Competition in the $2,000 to $4,000 street price range
continues to intensify. Apple must continue to articulate the Macintosh
advantages to avoid comparisons based only on price.
SLT 386s/20
The SLT 386s/20 is similar in design to the SLT/286, which Compaq introduced 20
months ago. Compaq's press release indicates that the 386s/20 is nearly twice
as fast as the SLT/286. The SLT 386s/20 weighs 14 pounds and has three hours
of battery life. It comes standard with 2 MB of memory, a 3 1/2-inch diskette
drive, and a VGA monochrome display. Two models of the 386s/20 are available:
60 MB disk: $6,799
120 MB disk: $7,499
IMPACT ON APPLE: The SLT 386s/20 is priced higher than the Macintosh Portable
and so shouldn't impact its sales significantly. The low-end version of the SLT
386s/20 is priced $1,300 more than the 40 MB version of the Macintosh Portable.
Furthermore, the active matrix screen technology of the Macintosh Portable
provides significantly better screen response time, thereby supporting the
graphical environment of the Macintosh. Most PC compatible portables,
including the SLT 386s/20, use supertwist LCD screen technology. Supertwist
LCD makes operating a graphical environment, such as Windows 3.0, very
difficult, because the pointer/cursor keeps disappearing from view.
